Fall is a great time for pumpkin picking, Halloween festivals, and all things spooky. But it’s also a great time to celebrate community events! The Southern Wake County and Greater Harnett County areas are abuzz with special and annual events in the next two months.
Check out a few of the highlights we collected during October and November, and get connected with the community!
2018 Chalk Fest
Do you fancy yourself a regular Picasso of sidewalk art? Show off yours skills at the 2018 Chalk Fest in Dunn, a community event co-sponsored by the Harnett County Arts Council and the locally-owned business The Cellar. You can either draw solo or gather a team, then create a masterpiece in a five foot by five foot square of top-notch cement.
There will be three different age groups competing, and artists have a limited amount of time to complete their piece before judging. Each division has three different awards — Best in Show, Best Design, and Best Use of Color — and winners receive a cash price.
If you’re in it to take home some hardware, then give it your all for the Popularity Vote. Whoever garners the most votes from the general public gets a trophy!
American Legion Whole Hog & Pork Shoulder Cook Off
This year the Fuquay-Varina American Legion is hosting their first ever Annual Whole Hog and Pork Shoulder Cook Off. The Legion encourages the public to come out and sample a few of the pork dishes, then vote on which they like best.
Those participating will compete for trophies, People’s Choice Award, and prize money. The event is even officially sanctioned by the NC Pork Council, and winners can move on to the state competition.
Follow Me to Fuquay-Varina Concert Series
The last of the FM2VQ concert series will take place on November 1. The series has been going on since 2015 and draws huge crowds into the downtown area. With local breweries, an array of food trucks, and fun activities for kids, there’s something to enjoy for everybody.
Check out the feel-good dance music of the Embers at the last concert, and enjoy an outdoor evening before winter moves in!
20th Annual N.C. Cotton Festival
Dunn comes alive the first weekend in November as residents and visitors from all around come out for the annual Cotton Festival. The downtown area is jam-packed with music and entertainment on two stages, tons of food trucks and art booths, activities for kids, and tons more.
If you’re curious about the role of cotton in the N.C. area, take a free tour of the cotton gin and learn a little about the history of the agricultural product!
Town Tree Lighting
Say farewell to the months of October and November and welcome the holiday season with the annual tree lighting ceremony. Held in Downtown Fuquay-Varina, the tree lighting features a holiday choir, a visit from Santa, and festive decorations galore.
It’s the perfect way to ring in the winter season, and celebrate with the rest of the community!
