Not really a cold weather or winter person? Do we have some news for you! These Triangle activities just might have you singing a different tune about your least favorite season.
Check out these fun things to do in winter.
Explore a museum
The Raleigh area is filled with unique, educational, and fun museums—art, history, culture… we’ve got it all. Even if you’ve been to one or two before, it’s worth a second visit, since exhibits are always changing and rotating. Here are a few of our favorites.
- North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
- North Carolina Museum of Art
- Kidzu Children’s Museum
- Marbles Kids Museum
- Ackland Art Museum
Catch a hockey game or practice
You don’t even have to be a big hockey fan to have fun at Carolina Hurricanes games! Just head over to PNC Arena to cheer on the red and black. If you are a hockey fan, though, you might also enjoy catching a Hurricanes practice. Just be sure to check the schedule first to find out when public practices are held.
Go for a skate
Feeling inspired by all the hockey you’ve been watching? Head on over to one of the Triangle’s indoor rinks for a public skate—it’s fun for all ages. Most rinks offer additional programs, too, if you want to learn to figure skate or join a hockey league. Here are some good ones:
- Polar Ice House (Cary, Raleigh, Garner)
- Polar IcePlex (Raleigh)
- Raleigh Center Ice (Raleigh)
- Orange County Sportsplex (Hillsborough)
Discover the wonders of the night sky
When was the last time you just sat and looked at the stars? Probably a while, right? But you don’t have to shiver on a blanket outside to admire the cosmos; just head over to Morehead Planetarium for a stargazing outing or a special event, like Science LIVE.
Celebrate the Chinese New Year
This isn’t like any New Year’s celebration you’ve been to before! For a totally new experience, head over to NC State Fairgrounds on February 1 to enjoy a full day (11am – 7pm) of performances, authentic food, activities, and more. Get your tickets ahead of time and save $4, too!
Yes, in winter. It’s really not that bad here, trust us! And we have plenty of mild days perfect for getting outside and breathing in some crisp, refreshing air. Plus, Raleigh’s really the perfect city for outdoor lovers thanks to all of its beautiful parks and trails. You might even argue that winter is a better time for hiking than summer—no humidity!
Take a trip
The Triangle is filled with fun… but it’s also perfectly situated for a weekend road trip! Just pack an overnight bag, hop in the car, and see where the road takes you. In just one or two hours, you could be dining next to the ocean or wiggling your toes in the sand. Two hours or so and snow-capped mountains might be your view. Not too bad for a weekend getaway!
